Master of Science

Candidates are those who:

Have a bachelor's degree in any of the following areas: Biological and Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Physical-Mathematical and Engineering Sciences and Humanities and Arts
Have an average of 8 (eight) at least in their bachelor's degree studies
By way of exception, they can be students of any bachelor's degree of UNAM who have not yet obtained their degree, have an average of 9 (nine) at least, have accredited all the bachelor's degree subjects and only have their social service and thesis pending, or
They are students who have not yet finished their bachelor's degree in medicine at UNAM, have an average of 9 (nine) at least, a background of having taken part in research, have finished the fourth year of their degree and have only their internship and social service pending.

COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS

FIRST PHASE

Characteristics:

Submit a duly completed registration application form
Accreditation of requirements complied with (submission of documentation)
Pass the English language reading comprehension examination
Analysis of the candidate's curriculum vitae by the Admission Commissions

Note: The English language reading comprehension examination will cost $100.00 (One hundred Mexican pesos)

For candidates to the BIOETHICS Main Field of Study there will be a special preparatory course to be announced shortly.

It is necessary to pass the first phase to be able to proceed to the second.

SECOND PHASE

Characteristics:

Passing the Preparatory Course (recommended for all candidates) or
Passing the examinations in knowledge of Research Methodology, Basic Statistics and Basic Epidemiology.
Intellectual skills tests

Note: The preparatory course will have a cost of $5,000.00 (Five thousand Mexican pesos) and includes the examinations mentioned above
For those who do not take the preparatory course, the examinations will have a cost of $1,450.00 (One thousand four hundred and fifty Mexican Pesos)

It is necessary to pass the second phase to be able to proceed to the third.

THIRD PHASE:

Characteristics:

Personal interview with the person in charge of the Main Field of Study
Presentation and discussion before an admission commission of the research project proposal that must be jointly prepared with a potential tutor whether or not the preparatory course has been taken. Said tutor must be approved by the Academic Committee of the Program (see list of tutors on the Program).

Documents needed for the third phase: (To be handed in to the Program Coordinating Office, School of Medicine, Building B, 6th floor).

Research project proposal supported by a potential tutor accredited by the Academic Committee of the Program. On diskette with one printed original and four copies.
Letter from the potential tutor indicating the academic strengths and weaknesses of the candidate in taking postgraduate studies and mentioning his/her commitment to act as tutor should he/she be accepted. Original

In compliance with International Normativity and the General Health Law, all candidates, should they be accepted, commit themselves to obtain the approval of the Research and Bioethics committees of the health institution that will be responsible for supporting the research project.

DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR REGISTRATION

Program Registration Process: For accepted candidates exclusively (To be handed in to the Program's School Technical Unit)

1. Official original bachelor's degree grades certificate

Mexican students who studied in a national institution other than UNAM are required to PRESENT A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATE THAT HAS BEEN COMPARED WITH THE ORIGINAL. This can be done in the School of Medicine, UNAM (1st floor, Building "B", School Services, School of Medicine, Mr. Enrique García Cebadúa. Cost $100.00)
Foreign students PRESENT THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE. If this is not in Spanish it must be translated by an authorized expert translator.

2. Bachelor's degree certificate and master's degree certificate (if this degree has been taken)

UNAM graduates, present a photocopy of both sides
Graduates from institutions other than UNAM, present copy of the certificate that has been COMPARED with the original.
Foreign students who have studied abroad, present a copy that has been LEGALIZED or APOSTILLED in the Mexican Consulate of the country where the degree was taken. The degree certificate must also be COMPARED in the Medicine School. If it is not in Spanish, it must be translated by an authorized expert translator prior to presentation.

 

3. Birth Certificate

UNAM graduates, present photocopy
Mexican students who are NOT UNAM graduates, present Birth certificate that has been COMPARED with the original
Foreign students, present legalized or apostilled birth certificate. In the case of foreign students, proof of their legal status as students (notarized copy)covering the length of the corresponding school semester is required and annual renewal must be opportunely presented.
Naturalized students must annex a notarized copy of their letter of naturalization or certificate of nationality.

 

Doctor of Science
Advanced Level


Candidates are those who:

Have a Master of Science degree
An average of 8.5 (eight point five) in his/her master's degree studies
Have published in journals with a high degree of academic quality in the opinion of the Academic Committee or have Publications for General Circulation Related to the Research, or Work presented at Congresses. Candidates who have recently received their master's degrees must have at least one publication as author or co-author. Candidates who graduated more than five years ago must document productivity that is congruent with their professional and academic trajectory in the opinion of the Academic Committee.
Are students of the Program's Master's Degree who have covered the corresponding credits and are writing up their theses and are committed to obtaining their master's degree in the six months following their admission to this level of studies. This information must be vouched for by the main tutor.
By way of exception, they are professionals with a bachelor's degree but no master's degree who have proved to be active researchers with numerous publications as main authors in refereed journals of academic prestige (on average they must have published three times a year over the last five years) and at least four years teaching experience at master's degree or doctoral level, as well as having supervised master's degree or doctoral theses in academic programs of prestige in the opinion of the Academic Committee that authorizes their admission.

Receipt of payment of examination fees
Proposal document from the members of the tutorial committee, with the approval of the potential tutor and a letter from each tutor agreeing to form part of said committee (all committee members must be accredited as doctoral tutors by the Program).

Approval of the second phase of the assessment is necessary to be able to proceed to the third phase.

Once the requirements for the second phase of the selection have been satisfied and before the third phase begins, all the preselected candidates will be assigned a potential tutorial committee to advise them on the preparation of their research outline during the four months preceding the assessment of the protocol by an admissions commission.


THIRD PHASE:

Characteristics:

Presentation and defense of an exceptional quality of the research outline before the authorized admissions commission.

The research outline must have the quality corresponding to the academic level of a Ph.D. and shall consist of original research, generated ex profeso with the purpose of obtaining the academic degree and that trains the student in the different phases of research: bibliographical search, posing of the problem and hypothesis, design, collection of data and quality control of same, analysis plan and preparation of conclusions. The person in charge of the project will be the candidate who may adapt it in the light of the observations made by the tutorial committee, the admissions commission and the collegiate bodies of the program. No outlines are accepted that are part of a broader study, are not under the control of the doctoral student and therefore cannot be modified to comply with the recommendations of the tutorial committee.
The Research outline must be supported in writing by the potential tutorial committee and comply with the guidelines issued by the Academic Committee.

Research Project supported by a potential tutor accredited by the Academic Committee of the Project. On diskette and in printed form, one original and four copies.
Letter from the potential tutor indicating the academic strengths and weakness of the candidate in taking postgraduate studies and stating his/her commitment to act as tutor should he(she be accepted.

In compliance with International Normativity and the General Health Law, all candidates, should they be accepted, commit themselves to obtain the approval of the Research and Bioethics Committees in the health or education institution that will be responsible for supporting the research project. Presentation of this document is indispensable for registering for the Program.
