DENTAL SCIENCES FIELD OF KNOWLEDGE
Academic Development Areas: Clinical Dental Sciences and Basic Dental
Sciences (Buccal Biology, Dental Biomaterials and Public Oral Health)
Master of Science
Candidates are those who:
Have a degree in Dental Medical Surgery or its equivalent or a degree
from the following areas: Biological and Health Sciences, Social Sciences,
Physical-Mathematical and Engineering Sciences and Humanities.
Have an average of 8 (eight) at least in their bachelor's degree studies.
Have taken a Dental Specialty and have obtained the corresponding diploma
or are in the process of being awarded the diploma (for candidates to
the Clinical Area) or
By way of exception, they can be students of the bachelor's degree in
Dental Surgery or the above mentioned areas of UNAM who have not obtained
their degree, have an average of 9 (nine) at least, have a background
of having taken part in research; have finished the fifth year of their
degree and have only their social service and thesis pending. In this
case, students who wish to be admitted to the Clinical Area must begin
a dental specialty and obtain the corresponding diploma.

COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS
FIRST PHASE
Characteristics:
Submit the duly completely registration application form
Accredit the requirements complied with (submit documentation)
Pass the English language reading comprehension examination
Analysis of the candidate's curriculum vitae by the Admission Commissions
Note: The English language reading comprehension examination will
cost $100.00 (One hundred Mexican pesos)

Completed registration form. (This can be obtained from the Postgraduate
Building of the School of Denistry, first floor, Dr. Claudia de León,

Bachelor's degree certificate, issued or recognized by the National
Educational System, in Dental Surgery or any of the following areas:
Biological and Health Sciences, Social Scineces, Physical-Mathematical
and Engineering Sciences and Humanities and Arts. Photocopy.
Document showing bachelor's degree grades and the average obtained.
Photocopy.
Diploma in a dental specialty recognized by UNAM or a document indicating
that the process to issue the diploma is underway (for candidates
to the Clinical Area). Photocopy.
Document proving registration for at least the second year of a Dental
specialty from the SPDS (for candidates to the Clinical Area). Photocopy

It is necessary to pass the first phase to be able to proceed to
the second.
SECOND PHASE
Characteristics:
Passing the preparatory course (recommendable for all candidates)
or
Passing the examinations in knowledge of Research Methodology, Basic
Statistics and Basic Epidemiology.
Intellectual skills tests
Note: The preparatory course has a cost of $(the real cost is yet
to be determined), and includes the examinations mentioned above
For those who do not take the preparatory course, the examinations
will cost $(to be determined according to the real cost)

Receipt of payment for registration on the Preparatory Course or

THIRD PHASE:
Characteristics:
Personal interview with the person in charge of the Main Field of
Study
Presentation and discussion, before an admission commission, of the
research project proposal that must be prepared through joint work
with a potential tutor whether or not the candidate has taken the
preparatory course. The tutor must be approved by the Academic Committee
of the Program (see the list of tutors on the Program)
Documents needed for the third phase: (Take to the Postgraduate

Research project proposal supported by a potential tutor accredited
by the Academic Committee of the Program. In diskette with a printed
original and 4 copies.
Letter from the potential tutor indicating the academic strengths
and weaknesses of the candidate in taking postgraduate studies and
stating his/her commitment to act as his/her tutor should he/she be
accepted. Original
In compliance with International Normativity and the General Health
Law, if accepted all the candidates commit themselves to obtain the
approval of the Research and Bioethics Committees of the Health or Educational
Institute which will be responsible for supporting the research project.

1. Official original bachelor's degree
grades certificate
Mexican students who studied in a national institution other
than UNAM are required to PRESENT A COPY
OF THE CERTIFICATE THAT HAS BEEN COMPARED WITH THE ORIGINAL.
This can be done in the School of Medicine, UNAM (1st floor, Building
"B", School Services, School of Medicine with Mr. Enrique
García Cebadúa. Cost $100.00)
Foreign students PRESENT THE ORIGINAL
CERTIFICATE. If this is not in Spanish it must be translated
by an authorized expert translator.
2. Bachelor's degree certificate and master's degree
certificate (if this degree has been taken)
UNAM graduates, present a photocopy of both sides.
Graduates from institutions other than UNAM, present copy
of the certificate that has been COMPARED
with the original.
Foreign students who have studied abroad, present
the degree certificate that has been LEGALIZED
or APOSTILLED in the Mexican Consulate of the country
where the degree was taken. The degree certificate must also be COMPARED
in the School of Medicine. If it is not in Spanish, it must be translated
by an authorized expert translator prior to presentation.
3. Birth Certificate
UNAM graduates, present photocopy
Mexican students who are not UNAM graduates, present a copy
of their Birth Certificate that has been
COMPARED with the original.
Foreign students, present legalized or apostilled Birth Certificate.
In the case of foreign students, proof
of their legal status as students in Mexico (notarized copy)
is required covering the length of the corresponding school semester
and annual renewal must be opportunely presented.
Naturalized students must annex a
notarized copy of the letter of naturalization or certificate of nationality.
Doctor of Science
Advanced Level
Candidates are those who:
Have a Master of Science degree
An average of 8.5 (eight point five) at least in his/her master's degree
studies
Have published in journals of a high academic quality in the opinion
of the Academic Committee or have publications for General Circulation
Related to the Research or Work presented at Congresses.
They are Master's Degree students on this Program who have covered the
corresponding credits and are writing up their theses and commit themselves
to obtain their Master's Degrees in the six months following their admittance
to this level of studies. This information must be vouched for by the
main tutor.
By way of exception, they are professionals with a bachelor's degree
but no master's degree who have proved to be active researchers with
numerous publications as main authors in refereed journals of academic
prestige (they must have an average of three publications a year over
the last five years) with at least four years teaching experience at
master's degree or doctoral degree level as well as having supervised
master's degree or doctoral theses in academic programs of prestige
in the opinion of the Academic Committee that will authorize their admission.

the second.
SECOND PHASE
Characteristics:
Personal interview with the person in charge of the Main Field of
Study
Passing the examinations in knowledge of Research Methodology, Basic
Statistics and Basic Epidemiology (Basic Epidemiology is for the basic
area only)
Passing the examination on the Main Field of Study (for the basic
area only)
Intellectual skills tests
Note: The examination fee will be $1,450.00 (One thousand four
hundred and fifty Mexican pesos)

Receipt of payment of the examination fees
Proposal document from the members of the tutorial committee, with
the supporting signature of the potential tutor, and a letter from
each tutor agreeing to form part of said committee (all members of
the committee must be accredited as Ph.D. tutors by the Program).

the third
Once the requirements for the second phase of the selection process have
been satisfied and before the third phase begins, all preselected candidates
will be assigned a potential tutorial committee to advise them in the
preparation of their research outline during the four months preceding
the assessment of the outline by an admission commission.
THIRD PHASE:
Characteristics:
Presentation and defense of an exceptional quality of the research
outline before the authorized admission commission.
The research outline must have the quality corresponding to the academic
level of a Ph.D. and shall consist in original research, generated
ex profeso with the purpose of obtaining the academic degree and that
trains the student in the different phases of research: bibliographical
search, posing of the problem and hypothesis, design, collection of
data and quality control of same, analysis plan and preparation of
conclusions. The person in charge of the project will be the candidate
who may adapt it in the light of the observations made by the tutorial
committee, the admission commission and the collegiate bodies of the
Program. No outlines are accepted that are part of a broader study,
are not under the control of the doctoral student and therefore cannot
be modified to comply with the recommendations of the tutorial committee.
The Research outline must be supported in writing by the potential
tutorial committee and comply with the guidelines issued by the Academic
Committee.

Research Project supported by a potential tutor accredited by the
Academic Committee of the Program. On diskette and in printed form,
one original and four copies.
Letter from the potential tutor indicating the academic strengths
and weaknesses of the candidate in taking postgraduate studies and
stating his/her commitment to act as tutor should he/she be accepted.
Original
In compliance with International Normativity and the General Health Law,
all candidates, should they be accepted, commit themselves to obtain the
approval of the Research and Bioethics Committees in the health or education
institution that will be responsible for supporting the research project.
Presentation of this document is indispensable for registering for the
Program.
