MEDICAL SCIENCES FIELD OF KNOWLEDGE

Master of Science


Candidates are those who:

Have a degree as Medical Surgeon or its equivalent.
Have an average of at least 8 (eight) in their bachelor's degree studies.
Have a diploma in a medical specialty or are in the process of being awarded a diploma, or
Are registered for at the least the second year of a medical specialty, approved in the Sole Program of Medical Specialties (SPMS) with outstanding academic performance in the opinion of the Academic Committee.
They may, exceptionally, be students of the bachelor's degree in Medical Surgery of UNAM who have not yet finished their degree, have an average of at least 9 (nine), a background of having taken part in research, have finished the fourth year of the degree and have only their internship and social service pending. In this case, students must begin medical residence and obtain the corresponding diploma before being awarded a master's degree.
They are registered as candidates to the Program
They must take part in the competitive selection process

COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS

FIRST PHASE:

Characteristics:

Submit a duly completed registration application form
Accredit the requirements complied with (submit documentation)
Pass the English language reading comprehension examination
Analysis of the candidate's curriculum vitae by the Admission Commissions

Note: The English language reading comprehension examination will cost $100.00 (One hundred Mexican Pesos)

Completed registration form. (This can be obtained from the Operational Unit or downloaded from the electronic page)
Bachelor's degree certificate in Medical Surgery issued or recognized by the National Educational System. Photocopy.
Document showing bachelor's degree grades and the average obtained. Photocopy.
Diploma in a medical specialty or document indicating that the process to issue the diploma is underway. Photocopy or
Document proving registration for at least the second year of a medical specialty. Photocopy.
Curriculum vitae in extenso. Original
Research project proposal (at this stage a summary of three pages minimum must be presented). Original

Compliance with the first phase is necessary to be able to proceed to the second.


SECOND PHASE

Characteristics:

Pass the preparatory course (recommendable for all candidates) or
Pass examinations in knowledge of Research Methodology and Biostatistics.
Tests of intellectual skills


Note: The preparatory course will cost $2,500.00 (Two thousand five hundred Mexican pesos) and includes the above mentioned examinations
For those not taking the preparatory course, the examinations will cost $1,450.00 (One thousand four hundred and fifty Mexican pesos)

Receipt of payment for registration on the Preparatory Course or
Receipt of payment for the examination fees

It is necessary to pass the second phase in order to proceed to the third.

THIRD PHASE:

Characteristics:

Personal interview with the person in charge of the Operational Unit
Presentation and discussion before an admission commission of a research project proposal that must be prepared through joint work with a potential tutor whether or not the preparatory course has been taken. This tutor must be approved by the Academic Committee of the Program (see the list of tutors on the Program).

Necessary documents for the third phase: (To be handed in to the corresponding Operational Unit)

Research project proposal supported by a potential tutor accredited by the Academic Committee of the Program. On a diskette and one printed original and four copies.
Letter from the potential tutor indicating the academic strengths and weaknesses of the candidate in taking postgraduate studies and mentioning his/her commitment to act as tutor should he/she be accepted. Original

In compliance with International Normativity and the General Health Law, all candidates, should they be accepted, commit themselves to obtain the approval of the Research and Bioethics committees of the health institution that will be responsible for supporting the research project.


DOCUMENTS NEEDED FOR REGISTRATION

Program Registration Process: For accepted candidates exclusively (To be handed in to the School Technical Unit of the Program)

1. Official original bachelor's degree grades certificate

Mexican students who studied in a national institution other than UNAM are required to PRESENT A COPY OF THE CERTIFICATE THAT HAS BEEN COMPARED WITH THE ORIGINAL. This can be done in the School of Medicine, UNAM. (1st floor, Building "B", School Services, School of Medicine with Mr. Enrique García Cebadúa. Cost $100.00)
Foreign students PRESENT THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE. If this is not in Spanish it must be translated by an authorized expert translator.


2. Bachelor's degree certificate and master's degree certificate (if this degree has been taken)

UNAM graduates, present a photocopy of both sides.
Graduates from institutions other than UNAM, present copy of the certificate that has been COMPARED with the original.
Foreign students who have studied abroad, present the degree certificate that has been LEGALIZED or APOSTILLED in the Mexican Consulate of the country where the degree was taken. The degree certificate must also be COMPARED in the School of Medicine. If it is not in Spanish, it must be translated by an authorized expert translator prior to presentation.


3. Birth Certificate

UNAM graduates, present photocopies
Mexican students who are not UNAM graduates, present a copy of their Birth Certificate that has been COMPARED with the original..
Foreign students, present legalized or apostilled birth certificate. In the case of foreign students proof of their legal status as students in Mexico is required (notarized copy), covering the length of the corresponding school semester and annual renewal must be opportunely presented.
Naturalized students must annex a notarized copy of naturalization or certificate of national.

Doctor of Science
Advanced level


Candidates are those who:

Have a Master of Science degree
An average of 8.5 (eight point five) minimum in his/her master's degree studies
Have published in indexed journals of academic prestige in the opinion of the Academic Committee or Have publications for General Circulation Related to the Research, or Work presented at Congresses. In the case of candidates who have recently received their master's degrees, a publication as author or co-author. Candidates who graduated more than five years ago must document productivity that, in the opinion of the Academic Committee, is congruent with their professional and academic trajectory.
Have a medical specialty and have obtained the corresponding diploma or be in the process of obtaining it, or
Be registered for at least the second year of a medical specialty approved in the Sole Plan of Medical Specialties (SPMS) and, in the opinion of the Academic Committee, show outstanding academic performance.
Are students of the Program's Master's Degree who have covered the corresponding credits and are writing up their theses and are committed to obtaining their master's degree in the six months following their admission to this level of studies. This information must be vouched for by the main tutor.
By way of exception, they may be professionals with a bachelor's degree but no master's degree who have proved to be active researchers with numerous publications as main authors in refereed journals of academic prestige (on average they must have published three times a year over the last five years) with at least four years teaching experience at master's degree or doctoral level, as well as having supervised master's degree or doctoral theses in academic programs of prestige in the opinion of the Academic Committee or whoever authorizes their admission.
Be registered as candidates to the Program.
Participate in the competitive selection process.


COMPETITIVE SELECTION PROCESS

Receipt of payment of examination fees
Proposal document from the members of the student's tutorial committee with the approval of the potential tutor and a letter from each tutor agreeing to form part of said committee (all committee members must be accredited as doctoral tutors by the Program).

Approval of the second phase of the assessment is necessary to be able to proceed to the third phase.

Once the requirements for the second phase of the selection have been satisfied and before the third phase begins, all preselected candidates will be assigned a potential tutorial committee to advise them on the preparation of the research outline during the four months preceding the assessment of the outline by an admission commission.


THIRD PHASE:

Characteristics:

Presentation and defense of an exceptional quality of the research outline before the authorized admission commission.

The research outline must have the quality corresponding to the Ph.D. academic level and shall consist of original research, generated ex profeso with the purpose of obtaining the academic degree and that trains the student in the different phases of research: bibliographical search, posing of the problem and hypothesis, design, collection of data and quality control of same, analysis plan and preparation of conclusions. The person in charge of the project will be the candidate who may adapt it in the light of the observations made by the tutorial committee, the admission commission and the collegiate bodies of the Program. No outlines are accepted that are part of a broader study, are not under the control of the doctoral student and therefore cannot be modified to comply with the recommendations of the tutorial committee.
The Research outline must have the written support of the potential tutorial committee and comply with the guidelines issued by the Academic Committee.

Research Outline supported by a potential tutor accredited by the Academic Committee of the Program. On diskette and in printed form, one original and four copies.
Letter from the potential tutor indicating the academic strengths and weaknesses of the candidate in taking postgraduate studies and stating his/her commitment to act as tutor should he/she be accepted. Original

In compliance with International Normativity and the General Health Law, all candidates, should they be accepted, commit themselves to obtain the approval of the Research and Bioethics Committees in the health or education institution that will be responsible for supporting the research project. Presentation of this document is indispensable for registering for the Program.

3. Birth Certificate

UNAM graduates, present a photocopy
Mexican students who ARE NOT UNAM graduates, present duly COMPARED Birth Certificate.
Foreign students, present legalized or apostilled birth certificate. In the case of foreign students, proof of their legal status as students in Mexico (notarized copy) covering the corresponding school semester is required and its annual renewal must be presented opportunely.
Naturalized students, must annex a notarized copy of their letter naturalization or certificate of nationality.


IMPORTANT NOTES FOR THE MASTER'S DEGREE AND PH.D. DEGREE ACADEMIC LEVELS:


1. For registration to be valid, it must be completed in the periods established by the Academic Committee and comply with the stipulations of the University Legislation, the General Postgraduate Studies Regulations and the Program.

2. By the agreement of the Medical Sciences Field of Knowledge Academic Subcommittee, candidates may apply for admission to the Program and submit documents to just one of the following Operational Units:

Center Operational Unit, Siglo XXI National Medical Center, IMSS
South Operational Unit, "Salvador Zubirán" National Medical Sciences and Nutrition Institute
"Ramón de la Fuente" National Psychiatric Institute Operational Unit
University Campus Operational Unit, National Neurology and Neurosurgery Institute
National Perinatology Institute (INPer) Operational Unit
National Pediatrics Institute Operational Unit
National Cardiology Institute Operational Unit

3. Students wishing to obtain a scholarship from a Health Institution must choose the corresponding Operational Unit.
For example: Students wishing to obtain one of the scholarships awarded by the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) must register with the "Center" Operational Unit, Siglo XXI National Medical Center, IMSS.
