Purpose of the Program

The Program is aimed at training leaders in medicine and dentistry for the XXI century. In the years to come, it will be necessary to transform our health system so that it can respond to the new requirements that the advances in medical sciences and the needs of health demand. This scenario makes it a priority matter to train human resources with the ability to innovate the national health system, combine high level scientific research with professional practice and multidisciplinary team work in order to contribute new knowledge to the health-disease process.

For this reason, graduates from all areas of knowledge without exception - Humanities and Arts, Biological and Health Sciences, Social Sciences or Physical, Mathematics and Engineering Sciences - have the opportunity to join the Program.

The Program offers its students a wide range of academic possibilities that come within three Fields of Knowledge: Medical Sciences, Dental Sciences and Health Sciences. These fields are sustained by their solid academic and physical infrastructure and by the synergy between schools, institutes and centers of UNAM and the most prestigious Institutions of the Health Sector that permit:

·  A tutorial system with more than 300 academics

·  High level clinical fields

·  Competitive laboratories and equipment

·  Information Centers

·  Red UNAM (the University network), and on-line connection with the National Digital Medical Library.

This makes it possible to comply with the main objective of UNAM: to train academics and professionals of the highest level.

ACADEMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PROGRAM

·   A flexible curricular system that favors the articulation of different fields of study

·   The development of research lines with inter and multidisciplinary projects

·   A graduate profile by competencies

·   The development of skills for self-directed learning

·   Collegiate functioning

·   The shortening of training times, since the medical or dental specialty can be studied at the same time as the master's degree or Ph.D.

·   A Program of excellence, included in the list of postgraduate courses of excellence of the National Council for Science and Technology

General Curricular Organization

The general organization of the academic activities that comprise the study plan is structured around 4 curricular cores:

I.  In-depth study of the main field of study

Organizes the specific contents of each of the different study fields (Major Area) offered by the Program. The student acquires dominion of the paradigms, the conceptual evolution of frontier knowledge and current problems.

II.  Methodological and instrumental training

Brings together the academic activities aimed at the student acquiring the methodological competencies necessary to carry out research, that is, the knowledge, procedures, techniques and skills in handling instruments or or designing instruments for the measurement of psycho-social variables by means of which new knowledge will be obtained in the different main fields of study.

III.  Complementary education

Implies the integration of a second field of study or minor areas of the Program (minor) by means of which the student can support the research for his/her thesis and is able to work with multidisciplinary approaches.

IV.  Research activities

These activities are based on a research and thesis seminar programmed for each semester and on the research work that is developed directly with a main tutor and/or tutorial committee which favors the early participation of the student in planning and carrying out research.
