MASTER'S DEGREE AND PH.D. DEGREE IN MEDICAL,
DENTAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES PROGRAM
Academic Development Area: Medical and Surgical Sciences
Main Fields of Study: correspond to the 74 specialties
approved in the Sole Plan of Medical Specialties (SPMS).
In this field, professionals are trained to be competent in the planning and development of medical and surgical research; they will have the ability to contribute new knowledge to the different fields of the specialties; be able to put forward solutions to health-disease problems from the perspective of research of a basic, clinical or epidemiological character and have the knowledge necessary to critically evaluate and, where appropriate, apply existing scientific information.
Graduates in this field can be
found working as researchers in the different National Health Institutes or
third level of care Centers in the Health Sector. The majority are included
in the National Researchers System.
There are five Operational Units for this field in which students
can carry out their academic training:

XXI National Medical Center belonging to the Mexican Social Security Institute
with a group in La Raza Medical Center (Center)

“Salvador
Zubirán” National Medical Sciences and Nutrition Institute (South)
·
“Ramón
de la Fuente”
·
National
Neurology and Neurosurgery Institute (University Campus Operational Unit)
and
·
The National
Perinatology Institute.
·
The “Ignacio
Chávez” National Cardiology Institute and the National Pediatrics Institute
have now applied for incorporation into the Program. A decision in this respect
will shortly be taken.
The academic activities of the curricular cores are:
1. In-depth academic activities:
Human Biology, Molecular Biology Applied
to Medicine, Biological Bases of Normal and Pathological Behavior and Molecular
Mechanisms of Disease.
2. Methodological
and instrumental academic activities:
Clinical Research Methodology,
Research Methods in Psychiatry, Basic Statistics, Biostatistics, Experimental
Design.
3. Academic Research Activities
organized around a Research and thesis seminar corresponding to the field of study and research
work developed by each student with the assigned tutor or tutorial committee.
4. Complementary Academic Activities (electives).
5. Teaching Practice favoring the development of the competencies for self-directed learning, the communication of knowledge and teaching, training the student to carry out teaching activities.
Beginning Ph.D.
During
the first four semesters, students on the Beginning Ph.D. shall comply with
all the activities set forth in the study plan for master's degree students,
without being given any credits. They may then continue with the activities
stipulated for the Advanced Ph.D.
Academic activities for the Advanced
Ph.D. come under two headings:
I.
Basic academic activities: Research
work and research and thesis seminars (compulsory).
II. Supplementary
activities: Courses, seminars and workshops that provide a solid academic
training in general knowledge of his/her field of study and in specific fields
of interest (subject to the approval of his/her Tutorial Committee).
