Isolation of immunophagocytosis inducing proteins
OBJECTIVES
- Study of the structure-function relationship between the saccharidic components
of the macrophage membrane
SUMMARY
There are carbohydrates on the surface of all cells that participate as receptors
of different factors including toxins, hormones, bacteria and viruses. The great
structural diversity associated with carbohydrates allows us to suppose that
they could participate in the same way in various cell communication processes.
Specifically, the macrophage represents the first line of defense and, for this
reason, we consider that one of the mechanisms regulating its activity is through
the different processes in which its membrane components also participate. In
order to evaluate our hypothesis, we have used different lectins whose specificity
we have been able to identify and, in this way, we evaluated the effect these
induce on immune response processes in in vivo and in vitro studies.
