International Action Planning Workshop on Taenia solium Cysticercosis/Taeniosis

with Special Focus on Eastern & Southern Africa

K. Darwin Murrell (Guest Editor)

A Regional Action Plan for Combatting Taenia solium Cysticercosis/Taeniosis in the Eastern & Southern Africa Region (RAP) was formulated by multidisciplinary group of scientists, government authorities, health and veterinary officials, community leaders and delegates from international and regional support agencies at the "International Action Planning Workshop for Taenia solium cysticercosis/Taeniosis with Special focus on the Eastern & Southern Africa Region" held in Arusha, Tanzania, 19 - 22 August, 2002. The overall objective of convening the workshop was to increase cysticercosis awareness and improve human health, smallholder pig production, the domestic food supply and export opportunities for pork in Eastern & Southern Africa (ESA) and elsewhere by developing and implementing an appropriate and sustainable surveillance, prevention and control programme for Taenia solium cysticercosis. Delegates to the workshop, recognizing that the cysticercosis problem transcends national borders, adopted a regional approach to the situation in order to make more effective and efficient use of scarce resources.
