Population immunity and vaccine protection against infection

Vaccines act by two broad main mechanisms. They can block infection occurring entirely or they can halt the progression to symptoms after infection occurs.1 The most direct pathway to population immunity is the first mechanism, also known as sterilising immunity. Because, if a person cannot get infected, they cannot transmit. For this reason, there has been tremendous interest in determining the extent to which COVID-19 vaccines block infection

COVID-19 and cancer: 1 year on

On Jan 21, 1668, the English civil servant and diarist Samuel Pepys received an urgent message from his cousin, Kate Joyce. “If I would see her husband alive,” Pepys wrote, “I must come presently.” He hurried to his relatives' house and found Anthony Joyce gravely ill: “his breath rattled in his throat…all despair of him, and with good reason.”

Distinct cellular immune profiles in the airways and blood of critically ill patients with COVID-19

Background Knowledge of the pathophysiology of COVID-19 is almost exclusively derived from studies that examined the immune response in blood. We here aimed to analyse the pulmonary immune response during severe COVID-19 and to compare this with blood responses.

Resurgence of SARS-CoV-2: detection by community viral surveillance

Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic has mainly relied on case reporting which is biased by health service performance, test availability and test-seeking behaviors. We report a community-wide national representative surveillance program in England involving self-administered swab results from 594,000 individuals tested for SARS-CoV-2, regardless of symptoms, from May to beginning of September 2020

      Addressing racial inequities in medicine

COVID-19 inequitably affects marginalized racial and ethnic populations across the world. A review of more than 17 million adult patients in the United Kingdom revealed a nearly twofold risk of death from COVID-19 among Black and Asian populations compared with white populations (1). Black people comprise 12.5% of the US population, yet they account for more than 18% of COVID-19 associated deaths
